Introduction
Mahatma Gandhi is known as the father of the nation, who played a fundamental role in the independence of the country and showed the path of truth and non-violence to all. His full name was Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. Mahatma Gandhi is considered a great leader of the Indian national movement against British rule.
Birth and Education
Mahatma Gandhi was born on 2 October 1869 at Porbandar in Gujarat. His father’s name was Karamchand Gandhi and mother’s name was Putlibai. Gandhiji did not like studies in his childhood, but from childhood he knew the difference between proper and unfair. He got his primary education from Porbandar, did the high school examination from Rajkot. When Gandhiji was only thirteen years old and studied in school, he was married to Kasturba, the daughter of a merchant from Porbandar. Later, he went to England to study law.
Mahatma Gandhi’s contribution in freedom struggle and his movements
Mahatma Gandhi liberated the country from the chains of slavery through various movements, laying the foundation of the principle of “Ahinsa Parmo Dharma”. He was a good politician as well as a great orator. The words spoken by him are still used by the people. He made many movements against British rule, including Non-cooperation movement, Salt march, Dalit movement, Quit India movement, Champaran movement etc, are prominent.
Gandhi Gandhi as a writer
Gandhi was a skilled politician as well as a very good writer. Mahatma Gandhi worked as an editor at Harijan, Indian Opinion, Young India. And the major books written by him are Hind Swaraj, Satyagraha in South Africa (in which he describes his struggle in South Africa), India of my dreams and Village Swaraj. Which still guides society.
Death of Gandhi Gandhi
Gandhiji was shot and killed by Nathuram Godse at Birla Bhawan in Delhi on the evening of 30 January 1948. Seven people, including Nathuram, were convicted in the murder. It was a moment of sorrow for the country.
Conclusion
Mahatma Gandhi is not just a name but a symbol of peace and non- violence. Gandhi ji gained international fame for his non-violent protest. Today Gandhiji is not with us, but his ideal principles will always be remembered by us. His name will remain immortal. In Gandhi’s words—
“The weak can never forgive.
Forgiveness is the attribute of the strong.”
