1. The speaker said, “I thank you, ladies and gentlemen, for giving me a kind hearing. When I arrived here yesterday I did not believe that I might meet so large a gathering”.
Ans: Addressing the gathering as ladies and gentlemen, the speaker thanked them, for giving him a kind hearing. He further told that when he had arrived there the previous day he had not believed that he might meet so large a gathering.
2. His mother exclaimed in sorrow that she had not a bit of bread to give him and that he had eaten up all the provisions she had in the house the previous day.
Ans: His mother said, “Alas! I have not a bit of bread to give you. You have eaten up all the provisions I had in the house yesterday.”

1. Reena said to the boy, “what’s the matter? Why are you crying? Be cheerful.”

7. “What is your name?” I asked the girl at the gate. “And where do you live?”
Ans: I asked the girl at the gate what her name was and where she lived.
8. He requested me to sit down for a few minutes. I told him that I would be late for school.
Ans: He said to me, “Please sit down for a few minutes.” I said to him, “I shall be late for school.”
9. “What did you do about it?” I asked the man. “Nothing,” he said. “I did absolutely nothing.”
Ans: I asked the man what he had done about that. He replied negatively that he had done absolutely nothing.
10. The teacher asked Namita if she had read The Diary of Anne frank. Anita replied that she hadn’t.
Ans: The teacher said to Namita, “Have you read The Diary of Anne Frank?”. Anita said, “I haven’t”.
