Narration in 2014 HS Examination – AHSEC
1. The lady said to the salesman, “What is the price of this Barbie doll?” The salesman said to her, “It is a bit expensive. But I can give it to you at a 20 per cent discount.”
Ans: The lady asked the salesman what the price of that Barbie doll was. The salesman told her that that was a bit expensive but he could give that to her at a 20 per cent discount.

2. One day Mohan told me that he would become a doctor and leave Assam. I asked him if he knew anything about medicine.
Ans: One day Mohan said to me, “I will become a doctor and leave Assam.” I said to him, “Do you know anything about medicine?”

Narration in 2015 HS Examination – AHSEC
1. “Where do you go every Sunday I asked the girl. She replied, “I go to the church”.
Ans: I asked the girl where she goes every Sunday. She replied that she goes to the church.

2.The teacher asked Rumi if she had read the Bible. She replied that she hadn’t.
Ans: The teacher said to Rumi, “Have you read the Bible?” She replied, “I haven’t.”

Narration in 2016 HS Examination – AHSEC
1. “How long do you have to wait for your train?” the woman asked me. “About an hour,” I replied.
Ans: The woman asked me how long I had to wait for my train. I replied that I had to wait for about an hour.

2. I asked Ranjan where Neena lived. Ranjan replied regretfully that he didn’t know.
Ans: I said to Ranjan, “Where does Neena live?” Ranjan said, “Sorry, I don’t know.”

Narration in 2017 HS Examination – AHSEC
1. The boy said to the teacher, “Sir, I am weak in English and seek your advice.” “Read the text thoroughly and try to express your ideas in simple correct English,” said the teacher.
Ans: The boy politely said to the teacher that he was weak in English and sought his advice. The teacher advised him to read the text thoroughly and try to express his ideas in simple correct English.
Or: Addressing Sir, the boy told the teacher that he was weak in English and sought his advice. The teacher advised him to read the text thoroughly and try to express his ideas in simple correct English.

2. My friend told me that he was very thirsty and requested me to give him a glass of water.
Ans: My friend said to me, “I am very thirsty. Please give me a glass of water.”

Narration in 2018 HS Examination – AHSEC
1. The speaker said, “I thank you, ladies and gentlemen, for giving me a kind hearing. When I arrived here yesterday I did not believe that I might meet so large a gathering”.
Ans: Addressing the gathering as ladies and gentlemen, the speaker thanked them, for giving him a kind hearing. He further told that when he had arrived there the previous day he had not believed that he might meet so large a gathering.

2. His mother exclaimed in sorrow that she had not a bit of bread to give him and that he had eaten up all the provisions she had in the house the previous day.
Ans: His mother said, “Alas! I have not a bit of bread to give you. You have eaten up all the provisions I had in the house yesterday.”

Narration in 2019 HS Examination – AHSEC
1. Reena said to the boy, “what’s the matter? Why are you crying? Be cheerful.”
Ans: Reena asked the boy what the matter was and why he was crying. She advised him to be cheerful.

2. The customer inquired if he could get a garden roller in that shop. The assistant respectfully replied that he would get it in the hardware department.
Ans: The customer said, “Can I get a garden roller in this shop?” The assistant said, “Sir, you will get it in the hardware department.”

Narration in 2020 HS Examination – AHSEC
1. Alexander said to Porus, “ How do you desire to be treated?” He answered, “Like a king.”
Ans: Alexander asked Porus how he desired to be treated. He answered that he desired to be treated like a king.

2. The boys exclaimed in joy that they had all passed the test and that they would celebrate their success the next day.
Ans: The boys said, “Hurrah ! we have all passed the test. So, we will celebrate our success tomorrow.”

Direct Narration and Indirect Narration

1. “Why do you do this ?” I ask Saheb whom I encounter every morning. “I have nothing else to do.” He mutters.
Ans: I ask Saheb whom I encounter every morning why he does this. He mutters that he has nothing else to do.

2. Ramen asked Pradip if he could come with him to the library. Pradip replied that he would be busy that afternoon.
Ans: Ramen said to Pradip, “Can you come with me to the library? Pradip said, “I shall be busy this afternoon.”

3. Gandhi said to Shukla, “I have to be in Calcutta, on such-and-such a date. Come and meet me and take me from there.”
Ans: Gandhi told Shukla that he had to be in Calcutta, on such-and-such a date. He asked to come and meet him and take him from there.

4. I asked Ranjan where Neena lived. Ranjan replied regretfully that he didn’t know.
Ans: I said to Ranjan, “Where does Neena live?” Ranjan said, “Sorry, I don’t know.”

5. “You must take the dog out,” he said with sour venom. “I shall certainly do nothing of that kind,” said the women.
Ans: He asked with sour venom that she must take the dog out. The women replied that she would certainly do nothing of that kind.

6. Adity asked Raj if his sister was at home. Raj replied that she wasn’t. She had gone shopping with their mother.
Ans: Adity said to Raj, \”Is your sister at home?\” Raj said, “She isn’t. She has gone shopping with our mother.”

7. “What is your name?” I asked the girl at the gate. “And where do you live?”
Ans: I asked the girl at the gate what her name was and where she lived.

8. He requested me to sit down for a few minutes. I told him that I would be late for school.
Ans: He said to me, “Please sit down for a few minutes.” I said to him, “I shall be late for school.”

9. “What did you do about it?” I asked the man. “Nothing,” he said. “I did absolutely nothing.”
Ans: I asked the man what he had done about that. He replied negatively that he had done absolutely nothing.

10. The teacher asked Namita if she had read The Diary of Anne frank. Anita replied that she hadn’t.
Ans: The teacher said to Namita, “Have you read The Diary of Anne Frank?”. Anita said, “I haven’t”.

11. “How long do you have wait for you train?” the women asked me. “About an hour,” I replied.
Ans: The woman asked me how long I had (to) wait for my train. I replied that it was about an hour.

12. My mother asked me if I had posted the letter. I replied to her that I had.
Ans: My mother said to me, “Have you posted the letter?” I said to her, “I have.”

13. Anil said to me, “What are you doing here?” “I am swimming.” I replied.
Ans: Anil asked me what I was doing there. I replied that I was swimming.

14.The doctor asked the patient how she was that morning. The patient said that she still had the pain.”
Ans: The doctor said the patient, “How are you this morning?” The patient said, “I still have the pain.”

15.“I want to work for you” , I said to Anil. “Can you cook?” Anil asked me.
Ans: I proposed Anil that I wanted to work for him. Anil enquired me if I could cook.

16. The man in the counter told me that the train would be an hour late. I asked him at what time it would reach Tinsukia.
Ans: The man in the counter said to me, “The train will be an hour late.” I said to him, “At what time will it reach Tinsukia?”

17. Anita said to me, “We are going to Thailand the following week. I asked her, “When will you return.”
Ans: Anita told me that they were going to Thailand the following week. I asked her when they would return.

18. The teacher told me that I needed to improve my grammar. I replied that I would try hard.
Ans: The teacher said to me, “You need to improve your grammar.” I said, “I will try hard.”

19. He said to me, “I won’t be able to complete the work today. Can I come tomorrow and complete it?”
Ans: He told me that he wouldn’t be able to complete the work that day. He asked me if he could come the next day and complete that.

20. I asked her if she liked the film. She replied that she didn’t like it at all.
Ans: I said to her, “Do you like the film?” She said, “I don’t like it at all.”

21. One day Mukesh told me that he would be a motor mechanic and leave Firozabad. I asked him if he knew anything about cars.
Ans: One day Mukesh said to me, “I will be a motor mechanic and leave Firozabad.” I said to him, “Do you know anything about cars?”

22. I said to a group of young men, “Why don’t you organize yourselves into a cooperative?” One of them said to me, “Even if we get organized, we are the ones who will be hauled up by the police, beaten and dragged to jail for doing something illegal.”
Ans: I asked a group of young men why they didn’t organize themselves into a cooperative. One of them replied me that even if they got organized, they were the ones who would be hauled up by the police, beaten and dragged to jail for doing something illegal.

23. The teacher told Minaxi that he would like to ask her a question. He told her that he wanted to tell her how she could do all the sums correctly.
Ans: The teacher said to Minaxi, “I will like to ask you a question. I want to tell you how you can do all the sums correctly.”
